Shining Light: Baroque Art of the 17th and 18th
Centuries
Presented by Betsy Solomon, MA
Baroque art fuses the technical mastery of the Renaissance
with a sense of dramatic light, ornate detail and innovative use of space. Italy,
Holland, France,
Spain and England each
create Baroque styles unique to their artistic contexts. This 7-part art survey will be enriched with
consideration of contemporary historical developments, and culminate in a guided
tour of the Saint Louis
Art Museum on March 17.

Why Is That Art?: Appreciating Contemporary Sculpture
Presented by Betsy Solomon, MA
This class is for anyone who has gone to an art museum,
gallery or sculpture park, looked at a piece of contemporary sculpture and said
to themselves “why is that art?” Or, “anyone can do that!” We will
discuss how to find the artfulness in artwork we don’t immediately identify
with. The second session of this
two-part series will meet for a guided tour of Laumeier Sculpture
Park.

Auguste Rodin and Camille Claudel: First Modern Sculptor and
Sculptress
Presented by Betsy Solomon, MA
According to the 20th century sculptor Brancusi,
“In the 19th century, the situation of sculpture was desperate. Rodin arrived and transformed
everything.” A Romantic in spirit with a
masterly ability, Rodin bridges us into 20th century modernity. By his side for part of her career, Camille
Claudel accomplishes inspired innovation in her work as well, except her sculptures
show us the creative visions of a woman.
